Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is right around the corner and the hype train has left the station. Actually, on second thought, Smash‘s hype train is off the rails. Between Smash‘s massive roster, the mysterious (and phony) “Grinch leak,” and Smash creator Masahiro Sakurai personally becoming disenchanted with character requests, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has channeled a sense of hype that few games achieve these days. In this vein, it’s only fitting that Smash has its own literal hype train.
Earlier this week, Paris’ Châtelet metro station completed work on a massive Super Smash Bros. Ultimate mural. Shared on Twitter by software engineer Jonathan Quach, the mural includes a gargantuan version of Ultimate‘s “Everyone is Here!” artwork as well as a tunnel dedicated to showing off each of the game’s characters. While game advertisements in subway stations are relatively common, Châtelet’s Smash advertisement is on an entirely different level.

Something about this whole thing reminds me of Ezra Pound’s “In a Station of the Metro.” Perhaps if Pound were writing today the poem would read, “The apparition of these faces in the crowd; Luigi fighting a big, round King K. Rool.” Either that or something about fascism. You can never be sure with ol’ Ezra.
