Today a Madden NFL 19 tournament was being held at Chicago Pizza at Jacksonville Landing, Florida, but it was interrupted by a gunman that reportedly fired shots on the attendees and athletes that were immersed in the competition.
The event was being livestreamed, and gunshots were suddenly heard in the audio before the stream was abruptly cut. The gravity of the situation became immediately apparent at the screen only showed the game’s menu with a disconnected controller.
Local reporter mentioned on Twitter that his sources speak of at least four attendees dead and eleven hit by the gunman. This has yet to be officially confirmed. Update: the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed “Multiple fatalities at the scene, many transported.”
Local Sheriff’s office confirmed the shooting and mentioned that the area is on lockdown, warning civilians including media to stay away from the area, which is reported not safe, possibly implying that the shooter still hasn’t been captured.
The situation is currently developing, and we’ll update this article when we’ll receive further information.
For the moment, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
Update 2: Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported that one suspect is dead at the scene of the shooting. There is no information on whether there is a second suspect. SWAT is “doing a methodical search inside The Landing” and people hiding in locked areas have been requested to remain where they are until they are found and call 911 to draw the attention of rescuers.
