First off, the GameCube controller is the best controller Nintendo’s ever made (sorry, N64!). Mine put up with hundreds of hours of SoulCalibur 2 button-mashing and it never broke sweat. And while I never played Smash Bros., I know one of the reasons Melee is still so popular today is because of the GameCube controller.
So, it’s good to see a couple of peripheral makers reveal GameCube-inspired Nintendo Switch controllers that are due out just in time for Super Smash. Bros Ultimate in December.
First up we have Hori, which has three new wired Classic controllers due out in October. There’s one with a Super Mario theme, one with a The Legend of Zelda theme and another with a Pikachu theme. Each connects to the Switch via a USB cable.

Now on to PDP, which has announced three GameCube-inspired Nintendo Switch Pro controllers of its own. Like Hori, PDP has themed controllers (one for Mario, one for Zelda and one for Pikachu) and, like Hori’s, PDP’s controllers are due out in time for Ultimate’s launch.
The PDP controllers let you play with the C-Stick or swap it out for a full-size stick, which is a nice option as it means you can recreate the original GameCube controller experience or go with two standard thumb sticks. Each has a 10 foot USB cable to connect to your Switch.
Of course, if you’ve still got your original GameCube controller, you can use it with your Nintendo Switch, you just have to buy a 20 adapter that’s due out alongside Ultimate.

Nintendo, mindful of the nostalgia for Melee, has a new Switch-themed GameCube controller due out in December. It costs 30 and needs the 20 adaptor to work.
