Walmart has let slip Sega’s new Switch game Team Sonic Racing, posting box art and screenshots online (via Resetera).
The product listing – provided by the video gaming version of Varys, Nibellion – touts 12-player online and four-player offline, split-screen multiplayer; a story mode; 15 playable characters separated into three classes (speed, technique, power); team racing with special team moves; and all the power-ups and car customisation you may already expect.
It’s about time – evidence of a new Sumo-developed Sonic racer has been building for a while. First it was via leaked internal slides at Sumo, then toymaker Zappies (I’ve never heard of it either) talked about a new line of toys for an unannounced Sonic racing game.
It’s jolly good news, even if it does spoil the PR bang Sega and Sumo presumably had planned. Sumo has quietly been becoming “the safest pair of hands in video games” for a while, as Martin put it, and the Sonic All-Stars Racing series was excellent. Exactly how Sumo will build on the series with Team Sonic Racing, though, we’ll have to wait and see.
